In all honesty, this year did not always feel lucky.
It came with some hard truths, some hard decisions and changes for the team. We’ve been quieter lately as we find our way back to a new rhythm that feels like us.
Sometimes it’s a challenge to navigate existing and thriving in a capitalist system while following our core values and intentions. This past year saw us struggle to find the sweet spot. Being a social enterprise striving to do impactful and values-driven work for our clients, our community, and our team, can feel like a constant, unachievable balance.
As we find our way, we are choosing to take the good from the hard lessons.
Here are the three things that motivate us to keep going:
- Our team. This eclectic group continues to show up for each other, for our clients, and ultimately because they believe in building a world with equitable access to prosperity. In the way we approach our work, there are very few things that have a simple answer. We tend to operate in the grey—taking in context and nuance and wading through decisions that balance people, values, and profit. Are there easier paths? Probably. But we are grateful for every day they choose to be here with us.
- Our clients. Similar to the above, our clients have choices. In the current economic climate, there is fear about what’s to come. Fear makes it easier to stick to “the way we’ve always done things” and dismiss the importance of investing in a more humanized approach which puts the values of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion at the heart of your organization. Every day, we are grateful for the clients who continue to put in the work alongside us to unlearn outdated approaches and embrace new perspectives. Their commitment to evolving as leaders and organizations, even when it’s difficult, inspires us. Together, we are building more inclusive workplaces where people want to be and people want to stay and ultimately stronger communities.
- Impact. It’s easy (and sometimes important) to get caught up in the day-to-day, but when we step back and look at the bigger picture, it’s pretty special to see the work we do has a real, lasting impact. Whether it’s through supporting human-centric hiring practices, working through uncomfortable learnings or driving forward meaningful conversations around what it means to create spaces of belonging, we’re contributing to something bigger than ourselves. And that, above all else, reminds us why we need to keep moving forward, even and especially when it’s hard.
Lucky number seven may not have always felt lucky. In hindsight, we realize that this year’s challenges were exactly what was needed to grow. As we celebrate seven years of working with incredible people and organizations we’re grateful for every lesson learned, every opportunity, and everyone who has contributed to our growth.
Here’s to the journey ahead—one of purpose, striving for that ‘balance’ and hopefully even a little luck.
Sincerely,
Bradley Daye and Matt Thomson
